Laguna Madre 3/21

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Texas week just ended a couple of days ago, that is the week almost all schools are off for spring break. The wind was crazy as always, with tides running the surf up to the dunes. The great news was that it kicked off the first big bait hatch of the year. My green light is now a vortex of baitfish every night. The shrimp and small crabs started hopping through my light as well. This has spurred an influx of redfish on to the flats. Drifting deeper potholes for trout has not produced any redfish during the past month or so. That changed this week. Spring has finally sprung! The winds have really had the water stirred up lately. This is the time of year I like to throw a Gulp Shrimp under a popping cork. The high winds and wave action muddy the water, and they aren't spooked by the popping cork. I have really leaned into throwing the gulp with a 4/0 circle hook. The lure jumps out of the water just like a bait fish if you pop it aggressively, and then sinks slow like a dead baitfish. I have caught tons of trout on it this month and only two of them were hooked in a bad spot. Those were both my fault. I got distracted and didn't see the cork go under, so they swallowed the bait completely. In other news my boat is at Huff Marine this week getting a new Suzuki 140 put on! Friday is break in day if all goes to plan. See ya'll on the water. Let's let a few go and watch them grow.
